Oceanverse Number 208

blog...

Two Years

Two years ago today, Oceanverse debuted on the web.  In those years (and the two/three years before that) Oceanverse has been a constant in my life.  These have been the most progressive, life changing years of my life, and I had to go ahead and work on a webcomic, too!  It may be crazy and it may be more trouble than it’s worth, but I know when I look back at Oceanverse, I will be able to see what I’ve learned and where this strip took me, both physically and emotionally.

An understanding wife is a good thing to have, and she’s the best.

Thanks to everyone who has stopped by and checked out the strip.  In the game of webcomics, you’re always trying to get more readers, more eyes on the screen, but sometimes you have to stop and be thankful for those who are here and will be here until the end.

We’ve got about another year to go folks, so hang on.  It’s about to get bumpy!

Also, don’t forget about the Oceanverse Two-Year Anniversary Gathering THIS FRIDAY!  Details are in the post below, but I assure you:  cake HAS been ordered!  So if you come, you are guaranteed a piece of cake AND a cup of coffee.  How can you pass that up?

Again, if you plan on attending, I would appreciate it if you contact me beforehand.

See you there!

Oceanverse Two-Year Anniversary Gathering

Ok, it’s official.  I will be holding an Oceanverse Two-Year Anniversary gathering on Friday, September 3rd from 6-8pm at the Caribou Coffee in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI (on Mack).  We will have cake and your first cup of coffee is on me!  Please let me know ahead of time if you plan to attend.

Nearly Two Years!

On September 1st, Oceanverse turns 2!  Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a little gathering/birthday party for it?  Maybe at a Starbucks or something?  Unfortunately, I don’t think I have the numbers to pull that off.

Still, if anyone’s up for it, let me know.  Maybe we can get the ball rolling.

Oceanverse #4 Cover Step-By-Step

I hope to have #4 for sale on DCBS in October, but here’s a step-by-step of the cover now.

Since this issue contains Ben’s time travel story and the first act of the current Fish Lord story, I thought I’d go with Ben on the cover and save the giant monsters attacking London for the cover of #5.  I wanted a somewhat psychedelic vibe to the cover, kinda like a 60’s rock poster.

Next is the coloring.  I added a bit of swirling in the background and based everything else on the big glow emanating from the opening of the capsule.  I really like coloring the line art.  On a piece like this, black lines would stand out like a sore thumb.

Finally, I besides the logo, I added some text and the “timeline” on the right side.  That was a last minute addition, but I think it ties everything together.

I really enjoy trying to make each cover unique by using different styles and techniques.  For issue #5, I may try a fully painted piece, but we’ll see…

I will let everyone know when #4 goes on sale.  I appreciate your support.

See?  OhHaiMe commented on BOTH strips this week, which increased his/her odds greatly.  Well played!

Week Three Winner Is…

Just Bill!

Thanks for playing Bill and I’ll be contacting you soon.

Though participation was down this week, we soldier on to Week Four.

By the way, I feel bad for Scott Pilgrim.  Getting beat by Sly, Julia Roberts and two previously released movies…ouch.

Scott Pilgrim!

Ok, I’ll make this short because I know this movie has been talked about ad nauseum on the web already, but I just saw it today and let me say that it’s my favorite movie of the year.  I’m a fan of the books, but the movie stands on its own.  Like the books, it’s coursing with energy and ingenuity and spontaneity that I believe, elevates the source material.  Edgar Wright turns every frame of film on its edge, finding new ways to explore the medium.  He throws everything at the screen and it all melds together for one thrilling film.

Go see it.

Comment Contest Sketches

Here are the sketches for the first two weeks of the contest.  Week Three is totally up for grabs.  If you leave a comment, you could win a sketch, too!
