The winner of this week’s comment contest is…
Jim Ford!
Congratulations and I will be contacting you soon.
To Earth G Billy, the winner of the first week’s contest, your sketch will be done soon. I was up north at the family reunion for the weekend, so I wasn’t able to finish it.
Onward to week 3!
Thanks for playing,
Mike
The Oceanverse Comment Contest wasn’t just a one-off event? It’s happening EVERY WEEK! No one has left a comment yet. But if YOU did, you could easily win a free sketch. C’mon, DO IT!
I will be drawing the first week’s winning sketch soon. As soon as I’m done, I’ll post it and maybe prime the pumps for future weeks.

Thus ends the first week of the Oceanverse Comment Contest! Thanks to all who participated and I hope we have even more comments in the following weeks.
The winner was selected by only the most official means:
The Judge:
And the winner is…
Earth G Billy!
You’ve won a 4×6 sketch of a character of your choosing! I’ll be contacting you soon.
Again, thanks to all and let’s keep this going!

So the San Diego Comic Con is this weekend (I will not be there…some day…) and that means that the Eisner Awards are also this weekend.
The very awesome webcomic, The Guns of Shadow Valley, created by Dave Wachter and James Andrew Clark, is up for the Eisner for Best Digital Comic. To wish them good luck, I am stealing their weekly contest. Don’t worry, I got Dave’s ornery, fist-shaking blessing to use it. So the details are as follows:
The Oceanverse weekly comments contest starts on Monday, July 26th (strip #197)! To enter the contest, all you need to do is leave a comment on the Oceanverse website for one of this week’s new strips. Once your comment is approved, you are entered into the contest to win a free original mini sketch, made custom just for you, of any one character you choose.
If you comment on the Monday AND Thursday strip, you will increase your chances of winning.
The mini sketches prizes are 4×6, ink and ink wash. If you win that week, you will be notified and asked what character you would like drawn for your very own mini sketch. The sketch will be lovingly created by me (creator Mike Schwartz) and hand delivered to your address by a uniformed member of the United States Postal Service. There will be one winner per week. One word posts, spam, or comments lacking any insight or effort will not be considered. Only approved comments will enter you in the contest, so make them thoughtful/entertaining/funny, and of course, make the comments relative to that comic page or the story as a whole. We can’t wait to hear from you!
I know, it’s been nearly two weeks since my last update. To be perfectly truthful, I haven’t been paying much attention to the website in those two weeks. Family life has been busy (Emmett has mastered crawling and is now fervently pursuing climbing), and I’ve been kicking my butt catching up on upcoming Oceanverse strips. I’m inking somewhere around strip #204, drawing around strip #235, and planning out the “final” story, which takes us to strip #288. I don’t like stretching my brain in all those directions, but that’s the situation in front of me.
But what’s going on with Oceanverse currently?
Well, Act I of the big three-act London Attack! story has wrapped and we’re now into Act II. The Herring is literally a fish out of water and the Fish Lord-controlled Ancient Guardians are making their way toward London for a little smashy-smashy. Ben has been kidnapped and Pepper is…around.
Stay tuned for more excitement.

Here’s an interview I did with the Two Guys Talking Webcomics podcast at the Kids Read Comics show a few weeks ago.
Also, who else is looking forward to Inception?

This just popped into my head the other day. Looking at this picture of Pepper, I realized she looks a lot like the alien from the 1955 sci-fi movie This Island Earth. This was completely unplanned, not even as a homage!
I did see This Island Earth years ago when it was lampooned in Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. Perhaps some piece of my consciousness recalled the alien head when I was doing the character designs for Pepper? Dunno.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Mike
